The one thing you’ll need to remember: PACK LIGHTLY – you’ll have to carry everything you bring! SHARE WHAT YOU CAN!!

 

This is the first revision of this document. Please send back with corrections to the list and I’ll make a final when time gets closer.

 

This may be one of those emails you’ll want to save and print. Remember that whatever you bring on this trip, you’ll have to carry. This means, you’ll need the proper rack, panniers, backpacks, whatever.

 

Obviously, you’ll need a rack and panniers. This photo shows one with rack, panniers AND a trunk on top. I find that a trunk isn’t necessary thanks to the invention of bungee cords J

 

Remember, road tires on your bike will not work, but you can buy inexpensive hybrid tires for your bike that will work wonderfully.

 

Here is a checklist of must-haves on your BIKE:

 

  • Bike, racks, panniers, trailer (if that’s your thing), handlebar bag, cell phone holder
  • Plastic baggies (you’ll thank me for this later) and rubber bands
  • Water bottle(s)  or hydration pack
  • Bike Lock – you can share with a friend, but I’m sure we’ll need to lock up
  • Bike Mojo – (i.e. mascot/trinket mounted on your bike) – Don’t ride without one!
  • Air Pump or CO2
  • Extra Tubes (bring lots to share too!)
  • Tool kit

 

Camping Gear

  • Tent with rainfly
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Air Mattress / Pad
  • Air Pillow or extra clothes in a sack
  • Mess Kit – little pot or pan to make soup or boil water Fork, Knife
  • Camping Knife
  • Insulated travel Mug – you’ll need this for coffee or soup
  • Flashlight / Headlamp
  • Batteries for Flashlight
  • ZIP Ties (I can’t tell you how frequently we’ve wished we had these, and no one ever brings them.
  • Duct Tape

 

Clothing

  • Helmet!!
  • Cycling Jersey or T-shirt. (Team Hangover shirts are available for $15 – SHOW YOUR TEAM SPIRIT)
  • Padded shorts (if you ride a wedgie bike)
  • Several changes of clothes. If our route planner ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) can find laundry facilities along the way, you can pack less. I’m sure some campgrounds have washing machines, so this may be useful information.
  • If you wear clip shoes, you’ll want to bring an extra pair of sneakers to change into.
  • Cycling gloves will help alleviate pain in your hands if you’re on an upright (wedgie) bike.
  • Socks. Bring plenty of these. If yours get wet, you’ll want to change them frequently
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Baseball cap / visor. Especially if you get bad bed-head J

 

Documents/Wallet

  • Driver’s License
  • ATM / Credit card
  • Cash – We’ll let you know about how much you need once our route planner shows us the stops.
  • Emergency Contact info – just in case – We need to know who to contact if something goes wrong.

 

Personal Items

  • Watch
  • Sunglasses
  • Cell Phone
  • GPS (always good)
  • Cell & Camera Charger
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Chapstick
  • Digital Camera or Camera (see Documenting below)
  • Lighter / Matches

 

Toiletries

  • Travel Towel / Washcloth
  • Soap / Shampoo (you can put some in a smaller bottle from target or dollar store)
  • Deodorant (please, do us a favor)
  • Toothbrush / Toothpaste (another favor please)
  • Hair ties / Scrunchies for the ladies
  • Disposable razor
  • Woman’s personal hygiene products for the ladies
  • Ear plugs (sounds funny, but people snore and these are priceless when you can’t sleep)
  • Your prescription medication
  • Vitamins / supplements
  • Band aids / First Aid
  • QTips
  • Aspirin / Advil / Alleeve – You’ll thank me
  • Antacid – Tums – A must have!
  • Toilet Paper!

 

Documenting the Trip

If you know me, I love to document our trips. This one is special to me and I plan on making a wonderful documentary in HD that will be posted to YouTube and on our websites. I’ll be doing a video diary every day, plus filming all of you with a GoPro and my cell phone. I encourage you to take as many pictures and videos that you can. Because I am overexcitable, I need them as soon as the trip is over, so email them to me as you take them. You can take a picture on the road and immediately email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it so I will have them the minute I get back. Please don’t be shy about the camera – this is a once in a lifetime trip that you will all want to remember.  Talk to the video cameras, smile for the stills. The more we have the better. The final video for this trip will also be submitted to the C&O and GAP websites for them to use as advertisements.

Accommodations: (Crash)

Crash, some things to keep in mind when planning the accommodations:

  • Our stops need multiple outlets for us to charge our phones and batteries
  • Anyone have Wi-Fi along the route?
  • Laundry facilities (yes, yes!)
  • Shower Facilities? (clean ones if possible)
  • Bar / Liquor stores?

 

Route Conditions (Skinny Steve):

  • Check for conditions of C&O canal
  • Find beer along the route
  • Bike shops? We may need them

 

Rookies:

Don’t worry, we’re here to help you. There’s no reason why you wont be able to carry all of this stuff in a backpack/panniers. Walt will help you reduce your weight to make your trip easier. We’ll probably only be doing 50 miles a day, and we have ALL day to do it. It’s not a lot if we leave early in the morning and take our time and enjoy the scenery. THIS IS NOT A RACE and no one will EVER be left behind. We are all doing this ride for the enjoyment. If we do 8 mph to get there, then so be it. It’ll allow more time to suck the marrow out of the scenery.
